According to the IT research and advisory firm Gartner, effective endpoint management can reduce the cost of operating a desktop PC by as much as 42 percent. Additionally, IT research, analysis, and advisory firm IDC (International Data Corporation) estimates that the proactive management of endpoint devices can lower the cost of operating an organization’s devices by as much as $700 per device per year.
Yet even with such compelling evidence of the importance of endpoint management, most companies lack a solution that provides visibility and is fully integrated into the help desk software. The independent technical research group at Ponemon Institute have determined that 71 percent of the devices out there are not under any credible endpoint management system whatsoever, meaning the organizations that depend on these devices have no way of knowing where they are or if they are even providing any value to the business.
How can your company get true visibility of endpoint devices in real-time from a proactive and comprehensive asset management solution?
Reexamine BYOD Policies
When users bring in devices from outside of the asset management system, tracking these devices and providing support for them and their users becomes complex and inefficient. Some companies are providing self-service solutions for BOYD devices, such as user forum groups, where users can help each other with device-specific solutions. However, this takes much of the control out of IT’s hands when it comes to security of the data and apps they are charged with safeguarding and supporting.
Another solution is CYOD, or “Choose Your Own Device.” CYOD gives users the flexibility they want to maintain a high level of productivity and mobility, while giving the business (IT in particular) the control they need to maintain a secure working environment. If BYOD is standing in the way of your endpoint visibility, discuss the possibility of CYOD with the executives. With the rise in cyber threats, few executives are resistant to policies that will safeguard the information critical to the business, its customers, and its workforce.
Look for Easy Integration of the Endpoint Management System
If the endpoint management system won’t integrate with the current help desk software nor scale well for use within the organization, it isn’t much good. Solutions abound that offer “discovery tools” and “proactive monitoring” but many of these are not user-friendly and offer only spotty CMBD info at best. Look for an IT asset management tool that features easy control of the entire IT infrastructure, as well as a one-stop shop for managing all computers, devices, servers, and network assets.
Opt for a Cloud-Based Endpoint Management System
A cloud-based solution offers mobility, flexibility, and scalability for identifying and tracking endpoints, while keeping hardware needs to a minimum and making the system affordable to all size companies. A cloud asset management solution also simplifies issues with endpoint management like regulatory compliance, tight security measures, and reliability. An established cloud asset management system improves the first line fix rates, reduces help desk call times, lowers the number of support tickets submitted, reduces the amount of downtime experienced by users, and improves the overall productivity of users by keeping devices monitored and up to date with patches and updates.
